Lesson #11

You can’t please everyone.

For the first time in a long time, a rush of excitement ran through Layne. He learned to follow his instincts years ago. Being a drummer in a band, he knew when to kick up the beat for the crowd, and being a trainer, how to push harder or ease up with his workouts. In the truck, heading to the Merino’s house for food and paintings, his instinct fell on Rex.

Something triggered inside Layne’s gut when meeting him at Cade’s. He wanted to know more about him, spend time with him. Now was his chance, yet he knew to stay reserved.

Soft rock hummed from the speakers as they weaved around the hills. Layne sat in the back of Cade’s Escalade with Gitana curled in his arm.

Rex swung his head around to look at Gitana. “Thanks for letting me sit in front, Wild Child. I tried twice last year to sit in the backseat. That didn’t go so well. Luckily I brought bags both times, just in case.”

“Did you use them?” she asked.

“First time I didn’t. Second time I did.” He plugged his nose and made a face. “The client wasn’t too happy with me.”

Gitana laughed. Layne smiled. His thoughts roamed from Rex to her. She was nervous about their evening. She had told him earlier how her family might react with Cade. Her ex held pedestal status with her papa; Layne learned the first time he visited. Being a neighbor, not a boyfriend, he posed no threat. Cade might since the man’s eyes lit up just being in the same room with her. Maybe not love…yet…but soon.

Gitana sat up and peeked around Rex. He stayed half twisted in his front seat for the entire two-hour ride as he chatted.

“Turn right, up here,” Gitana said when a narrow dirt road appeared.

Cade took the road slowly. A cloud of brown dust trailed behind as he drove around a sharp bend and into a valley. Trees shadowed the road.

“Where in the criminy hill are you taking us, Gitana?” Rex asked as he peeked over Cade to look out his window. The road seemed to disappear. “You’ll protect us, right, Layne?”

Gitana flicked her eyebrows at Layne. He ignored the look, not sure how to react. In a way, Rex’s attention flattered him. Like at the gym, he stayed casual and innocent. His eyes wandered discreetly. He knew the gays from the straights. They hid, not wanting to offend or find a fist to the face if they stared too long.

Layne offered a small nod. Another tug of war played inside him. For a few years now, he knew something wasn’t right. At the gym, he would run his hands down a woman’s thigh. He’d never get stiff when his face was next to their hips, smelling their scent. He never imagined ripping off their clothes or riding them. But with the other clients, the men, he found himself comparing bodies and deciding which one he preferred.

“Oh, thank God!” Rex exclaimed when they turned again to a meadow.
